Ramsons (Allium ursinum)
Ramsons (Allium ursinum)
Ramsons, or wild garlic, Allium ursinum, is a pretty British native wildflower usually found in moist soils in hedgerows and woodland - often on the banks of streams. It's widespread across Europe but particularly thrives in non-calcareous ancient woodland in lowlands throughout the UK. "Ursinum" as bears eat their small bulbs as a delicacy, apparently. Ramsons start flowering relatively early - in April - and are visited by honeybees and bumblebees. They spread freely once established, mostly by seed, and wild garlic leaves make a pleasing addition to a salad. Please note that Ramsons bulbs are dispatched from August to October.
