Variety

Blackcurrants (Ribes nigrum)

Blackcurrants are scarcer than Redcurrants in the UK in the wild. They're also chiefly found naturally in wetter situations in southern England. They flower early and are consequently vulnerable to frost damage, so should not be planted on exposed sites. Blackcurrants are a prolific early nectar source for bees and the varieties we sell will in combination give you fruit all summer. Delicious currants, enjoyed by us and the birds alike! We suggest siting blackcurrant bushes around 1.5 metres apart, and cutting back their shoots to just above ground level once planted.

We have selected some popular varieties here, in groups of three.

Varieties:
Ben Lomond: Scottish, sweet, fruits late July (illustrated)
Ben Sarek: Compact habit, fruits mid July
Boskoop Giant: Reliable, fruits early July
Malling Jet: Heavy cropper, fruits late August

Soil type: Fertile, moist, well drained
Bare root bush, 3-5 shoots
