Downy Birch (Betula pubescens)

Downy Birch (Betula pubescens)

Downy Birch, Betula pubescens, is an attractive and valuable tree, although short lived. It looks similar to Silver Birch, but has a darker trunk and its shoots are covered in soft white hairs. It does well in the cold and wet, rather than the Silver Birch's preference for dry conditions. Like it, though, Betula pubescens supports over a hundred insect species and its seeds attract birds, including Redpolls. Like all the native plants we sell, grown in the UK from UK origin seed. Downy Birch (Betula pubescens)

The birch was one of the first colonisers after the last ice age; its fine windblown seed can travel vast distances and the young trees grow very quickly. Downy Birch is common throughout Britain, though mostly found naturally in the North West. Oddly it has twice the number of chromosomes as Betula pendula. Go figure.

Our Plants For Sale

These plants are all bare root, and are consequently available for delivery from November until March ( please ask if you are interested in pot grown plants). During the lifting season there may be up to two weeks delay between placing the order and dispatching, due to weather conditions or pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence. Orders for Downy Birch placed between March and October are confirmed for dispatch from November.

Have a look at our videos on what to do when your plants arrive and how to plant a bare root tree.
