Common Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis)

Common Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis)

We're not sure if the Snowdrop is a native; Richard Mabey remarks that none were recorded in the wild earlier than the 1770s. They are now widespread, and like the Snow Crocus their very early flowering means they are helpful for honeybees in particular. They require shade and damp soil, and are typically associated with woodland.

Common Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis)

Please note that these bulbs are freshly lifted to order at the nursery and despatched between August and October and in the green in the spring. They are sustainably harvested from wild populations.

For larger areas, reckon on planting at 25 Snowdrop bulbs per square metre. Smaller sites can be planted at higher densities.

Snowdrops spread by natural division but do also provide helpful nectar for early flying bees, and pollen for their new brood. A welcome splash of white on those gloomy days in late winter.

Flowers: January - March
