Star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbellatum)

Star of Bethlehem seems to be native only in Eastern England, although even this seems to be disputed. It is, however, found widely across Europe and the Holy Land, from where it might have been introduced by pilgrims. What's for sure is that Star of Bethlehem has been widely naturalised in grassland here for many hundreds of years. In the Middle Ages it was also known as Dogs' Onions; its bulbs are edible. Its delicate white flowers bloom in spring, from April to May.

Please note that Star of Bethlehem bulbs are lifted to order at our supplier's remote nursery in Wales and dispatched from August to October.
