Wildlife Pond Plant Collection

This beautiful collection of native British plants (and oxygenators as well!) is all you'll need to kick start your wildlife pond. These are some of the best plants we could think of for wildlife and aesthetic appeal, supplied as generous 110cc plug plants or bare root, depending on availability. There will be 6 different species or more in your collection. It includes plants for different depths of water and pond margins; each species is labelled when it arrives.

Collection size

Wildlife Pond Plant Collection

Typically, reckon on between 5 and 8 plants per metre pond circumference, so our smallest pack - 42 plants - will work for a pond of between around 5m and 8m around. Each species has a label. We offer a mini 10 plant pack through our sister website, British Pond Plants.

Please note that this photo was taken in high summer; plants supplied at the beginning of the season may still even be dormant and will look quite different! Here's an explainer video

Typically . If you order 2 collections or more we will include at least one deeper water species too (see below), which will come with the oxygenators.

We include bunches of a native oxygenator with each collection, which we source from a specialist grower in Cornwall. Depending on seasonal availability this is usually Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum), or could be Crowfoot (Ranunculus aquatilis), Hottonia palustris, Water starwort (Callitriche stagnalis) or similar. The bigger the collection, the more we will include. We may send these separately to the other plants depending on timing.

If you want more diversity then you can add some of the pond edge seed mix too.

Please note that these plants are only available on a seasonal basis. The nursery grows new stock from autumn to spring, so we do not deliver over this period.

These wildflowers are grown without the use of peat, fungicides or pesticides.

You may need baskets for at least some of your plants if your pond has a butyl liner - we sell these too.

Plants are selected from the following:

Marsh Marigold (Caltha palustris)

Water avens (Geum rivale)

Water Plantain (Alisma plantago)

Watercress (Rorippa nasturtium aquaticum)

Yellow Flag Iris (Iris pseudacorus)

Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria)

Water mint (Mentha aquatica)

Soft rush (Juncus effusus)/Hard rush (Juncus inflexus)/Articulated rush (Juncus articulatus)

Water forget-me-not (Myosotis scorpioides)

Gypsywort (Lycopus europaeus)

Water figwort (Scrophularia auriculata)

Deeper Water (larger sizes only):

Lesser Spearwort (Ranunculus flammula)

Flowering rush (Butomus umbellatus)

Amphibious bistort (Persicaria amphibia)

Planting

If you can't plant straight away, open the package on arrival and sit your new plants in an inch of water on a tray. The oxygenators arrive crimped together in a lead clip to weigh them down, so they can be thrown straight in.

Your plants will either be "plug plants" or "bare root", depending on the time of year. They will arrive in plastic bags or a tray, with a brief description and instructions as to where to plant them.

If you have a plastic pond or butyl liner you'll need to use a container to plant into - have a look at our preplanted coir products if they might be helpful. We also sell specialist plastic pots, which I'm afraid are the best solution we have found for growing individual plants in other than our preplanted coir products. The pots need filling with subsoil or low nutrient growing medium - specialist aquatic soils aren't necessary, but freely available if you wanted to go this route. You may also need gravel to spread on top of the baskets to stop any initial leaching of the soil into the water. I'm sorry we don't sell growing media - we can't work out a way of shipping them that doesn't cost a fortune.

Planting aquatic plants could not be easier if you're planting into mud; just push them in, following our guidance as to planting depths.
