Apple Tree - Mannington's Pearmain
Mannington's Pearmain was a great favourite of the Victorians after it was sent to the London Horticultural Society in 1847 by John Mannington, a butcher in Sussex. His grandfather, a Mr. Turley, blacksmith of Uckfield, found the original tree in some cider pomace chucked under a hedge, around 1770. Mannington's Pearmain is now, sadly and inexplicably, a relatively rare Sussex apple. "Pearmain" as a description of an apple might have originally referred to its pear shape or the apple's keeping quality (from Old French parmaindre "to endure").

See our section on Pollination Groups to help you select your apple trees.
The rootstock for all our apple trees is the most vigorous available. We try to offer as many apple varieties as we can on M25 rootstock, which will produce the standard trees of a traditional orchard, where they would be planted between 6 and 8 metres apart. MM106, or M106, produces a good sized garden tree. Please refer to our size guide for details.
All our Mannington's Pearmain trees are bare root, so they are only available between November and April. During lifting season, there will be a delay between placing the order and dispatching due to pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence, and the weather. Orders taken from June-October will be confirmed in late October/ early November after a nursery stock take, for dispatch from November. Please consult our planting and care guide on receipt of your order.
Your purchase helps us support a range of charities, which are related to the products we sell.
