Cercis siliquastrum (Judas tree)
Cercis siliquastrum (Judas tree) is a small, highly ornamental tree with beautiful pink flowers before the leaves break in spring, followed by purple pods from late summer. It grows in a range of situations, although avoid anywhere too exposed as the stems are rather brittle. It will tolerate light shade.
The origin of the English name is obscure and, confusingly, another tree of the same genus, Cercis canadensis, (a native of North America), is also known by the same name. Siliquastrum originally came from Judea, so "Judas" could have been a corruption. Another theory suggests it was the tree Judas Iscariot hanged himself from. There's a list of these out there (!), including the Common elder.
As this plant is sold as rootballed we deliver it from November to March.
RHS AGM. Cercis siliquastrum is also recommended for bees by the British Beekeepers Association for its nectar flow in late spring.
