Grasses Only Seed Mix
This grass seed mix consists of species which you would expect to find in a wide range of unimproved grasslands across the UK. It's very similar to the grass mix we use in the wildflower meadow mixes we put together.
They're slow growing and relatively short and easy to work with, creating a nice open sward. This means they're good companions for for wildflowers. Sow at lower rates with wildflowers, or up to 15g/square metre on their own.
Please note that unlike our wildflower seed and the grasses in our "direct harvest" mixes, these grasses are certified varieties, rather than native seed originating from wild populations.
There's no VAT chargeable on grass seed, by the way.
Grass mix:
15.0 Common Bent Agrostis capillaris
30.0 Creeping Red Fescue Festuca rubra
35.0 Crested dogstail Cynosurus cristatus (pictured)
20.0 Smooth-stalked meadow grass Poa pratensis
Sowing rate: from 4g per square metre (40 kg per hectare, 16 kg per acre) to 15kg per square metre.

We strongly recommend reading up on wildflower meadows before buying seed - see our resources section and brief guide to preparation and aftercare, which includes links to our "how to" blogs and video.
Although we test our seed and it has high germination rates, you need to be careful about initial care and establishing an annual regime. Don't be put off though - once you get the hang of it it's pretty straightforward.
