Myrobalan (Prunus cerasifera)
Prunus cerasifera will occasionally bear fruit, which is red or yellow and rather sharp, but good for the birds or for jam. Its main value, however, is its very early blossom - even before Blackthorn. This isn't just decorative - it's an increasingly important source of forage in February / March for early flying bees in particular, and makes it into our top ten plants for bees. Technically - although it's a close relation to Blackthorn - it's an archaeophyte, i.e. it came to the UK some time over 2000 years ago. Unlike Blackthorn it doesn't sucker, which makes it a good candidate for an urban or suburban hedge.
Like all the native trees we sell, our Myrobalan are grown in the UK from UK origin seed. We sell 60-90cm 2 year old Prunus cerasifera plants in multiples of 5.

See our planting and size guide for details and tips on planting. These Cherry Plum plants are all bare root, and are consequently available for delivery from November until March (please ask if you are interested in pot grown plants). During the lifting season there may be up to a month's delay between placing the order and dispatching, due to weather conditions or pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence. Orders for Prunus cerasifera placed between March and September are confirmed in October ready for dispatch from November.
Have a look at our videos on what to do when your plants arrive and how to plant a bare root tree. Please ask about larger trees; we can often supply them but will need to quote on an individual basis as carriage varies so much.
