Heritage Plum Tree Collection
We've put together a small collection of three of the very best heritage plum trees. You can't buy their plums any more, but that doesn't mean they're not absolutely delicious! The will cross pollinate, offer culinary and eating plums, and - helpfully - fruit in succession over a month or so.
They're supplied by one of our best small growers, Tom Adams, who grows organically outside Shrewsbury. He specialises in hard to find regional heritage varieties. His immaculate nursery is Plant Healthy certified.
The Denbigh plum is a truly ancient fruit. Some say it was grown by Carmelite monks in the town as early as the 13th century! It's the only surviving native Welsh plum, and a real beauty. It's good for eating and cooking, and the trees are healthy and self fertile. Once nearly lost, the “Vale of Clwyd Denbigh Plum” has been awarded European Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status. The Vale has a long history of fruit production, which at its peak included well over 200 orchards. This history is apparent in Denbigh itself, which has street names like Bryn Eirin - "Plum Hill".
Pick in August if you want to cook with it, September to eat it fresh.
The trees are supplied as maidens - one or two year old plants, 60-100cm, which will establish well and quickly. They are on St Julien 'A' rootstock, which will produce trees of up to around 4m.
