Apricot (Prunus armeniaca) 'Moorpark'

Prunus armeniaca 'Moorpark' is the most reliable apricot variety, producing large round fuzzless fruit in August. Like Prunus dulcis, it is a very ornamental tree with beautiful blossom, flowering unusually early and beloved of honey bees. Apricots were recorded in Britain in the 16th century, and probably grown here much earlier, although they require warmth and lots of sun. Their time has come. 'Moorpark' was named as a compliment to Admiral Lord Anson, whose enormous Palladian mansion Moor Park was where the tree was cultivated in the 1700s. I suspect not actually by Lord Anson. He was obviously interested though - the first commercial variety of strawberry was said to have come from his kitchen garden and he employed Capability Brown to do his landscaping. The house, in Rickmansworth, is now a golf club with two championship courses originally designed by Harry Colt, a sort of latterday Brown I suppose.

'Moorpark' is self fertile. We supply it on sinister sounding Krymsk 86 rootstock, which will give you a nice sized garden tree up to around 4m.

Supplier: R.V. Roger

We supply all our fruit trees as bare root, so they are only available between November and April. During lifting season, there will be a delay between placing the order and dispatching due to pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence, and the weather. Orders taken from June-October will be confirmed in late October/ early November after a nursery stock take, for dispatch from November. Please consult our planting and care guide on receipt of your order.

Your purchase helps us support a range of charities, which are related to the products we sell.
