Walnut Trees (Juglans nigra and regia)
There are no mature walnut trees hereabouts as they were felled mercilessly for their gorgeous wood. They grow very well on our local deep, fertile and heavy soil, as you can see from this young tree in our old orchard. The Black Walnut is a native of America, whereas the Common, English, or Persian Walnut is from...Persia. Juglans regia was probably introduced to Britain by the Romans, whereas Juglans nigra is a newbie, arriving on the early 17th century.
Walnuts are delicious eaten fresh, as "wet walnuts", and can be pickled or used to make walnut liqueur if picked green earlier in the season. The trees are self fertile.
In truth, walnut trees aren't particularly beneficial to wildlife. There are some caterpillars which eat their foliage, and I'm sure mice, squirrels etc eat the nuts. We've listed them to sell on the site because I have a weakness for them. They're beautifully glossy, healthy looking trees - absolutely stunning either as individual specimens or in a mixed orchard. Walking in the shade of ancient walnut groves in the High Atlas is an experience I won't forget.
