Wild Cherry (Prunus avium)

Wild Cherry (Prunus avium)

Our native Wild Cherry, Prunus avium, is a fast growing short lived ornamental tree with high biodiversity value and all year round interest. The Cherry's prolific white blossom attracts bees and insects in the spring, and birds and small mammals feed on the bitter cherries in autumn, when the tree's leaves turn orange-red. Wild Cherries were cultivated and eaten as mazzards, principally in the West Country, and are enjoying a renaissance. They prefer relatively sheltered positions and lighter soils, and their small size and pretty blossom means they are often grown as garden trees. Prunus avium is hermaphrodite, so each flower has both male and female parts. Like all our native plants, grown in the UK from British origin seed. See below for more details.

Wild Cherry (Prunus avium)

Wild Cherry, known as Gean in Scotland, sucker freely - in contrast to Bird Cherry - and are often found proliferating at the woodland edge. The other native - or near native - Prunus we have in the UK is Prunus cerasifera, the Cherry plum. We include Wild Cherry in our mixed native woodland collections.

Like all the native trees we sell, our Prunus avium are grown in the UK from UK origin seed. We sell the 60-90cm two year old whips in multiples of 5.

Suppliers: RV Roger, Oakover Nurseries

Please note that standard sizes relate to tree girths in cm. See our planting and size guide for details and tips on planting Wild Cherry trees.

All these Wild Cherry trees are bare root, and are consequently available for delivery from November until March. During the lifting season there may be up to two weeks delay between placing the order and dispatching (longer for standards), due to weather conditions or pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence. Orders placed for Wild Cherry trees between March and October are confirmed for dispatch from November.

Have a look at our videos on what to do when your plants arrive and how to plant a bare root tree.
