Wild Pear (Pyrus pyraster)

Like the Crab Apple, the Wild Pear, Pyrus pyraster, is distinct from feral trees from pips. It is a good deal rarer than Pyrus communis subspecies communis, but sometimes found in old hedges. It's so rare, in fact, that we have been unable to find any plants in the UK, so had to import them from Denmark. It's not clear whether it's a true native or not, whereas Pyrus cordata, another species of pear sometimes found in the southwest, appears not to be. Anyway, this is one for the enthusiast of the esoteric. Pyrus pyraster is a distinctive slow growing small tree, tolerant of most well drained soils. A good tree for wildlife; pretty white blossom enjoyed by bees, and although its pears are hard and inedible to humans they are not, however, to a myriad of small mammals.

See our planting and size guide for details and tips on planting. These Wild Pear trees are all bare root, and are consequently available for delivery from November until March. During the lifting season there may be up to two weeks delay between placing the order and dispatching, due to weather conditions or pressure of orders, which are dealt with in date sequence. Orders for Wild Pears placed between March and September are confirmed in October ready for dispatch from November.
